The University of Nairobi (UoN) has been recognised for sustaining the bold commitment to redefining higher education. In a special "Member Recognition" feature, by the Network of Entrepreneurial Institutions Leaders (NEIL), the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, was celebrated for the institution’s shift toward producing graduates that are equipped with the tools to solve real-world problems and build sustainable ventures.
The Network of Entrepreneurial Institutions Leaders (NEIL) is a programme under the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) that brings together heads of higher education and research institutions. The agency’s mission is to catalyse the growth of entrepreneurial ecosystems across Kenya by promoting a "Triple Helix" approach that connects academia, industry, and government to drive national economic transformation. NEIL’s recognition highlights the University’s success in fostering a problem-solving mindset among its students.
Prof. Hutchinson’s leadership has continued to push for the adoption of innovation and enterprise as crucial components of the learning and research objectives. Some of the priorities include :
- Venture Building: Empowering students to transition from job seekers to job creators.
- Problem-Solving Tools: Ensuring graduates leave with practical skills to address societal and industrial challenges.
"For your leadership in building stronger innovation ecosystems and inspiring tomorrow's entrepreneurs, we celebrate you and honor your vision," the NEIL recognition stated.
The recognition is happening at a time when the University is hosting the 72-hour Bio-Tec and Med-Tec Innovation Challenge with students engaged in developing their ideas for health, biomedical, and life-science innovations. The challenge is also part of the activities to promote student-led innovation clubs.
The latest recognition reaffirms the University’s commitment to maintaining its leading role in creativity, innovation, and long-term national development.
